Overcome the Python Spirit

Do you find it hard to pray? Are your finances drying up? Do you get extremely exhausted when you try to read the word?

You could be wrestling with the spirit of python.  The python spirit comes to disrupt us from moving fully into our destiny.  

Acts 16:16-18 reveal the operations of a python spirit. 

While in Philippi, the Apostle Paul and Silas encountered a young slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination and through her fortune-telling she made masters lots of money. 

Divination means using witchcraft to discover future events or cause future events to happen by supernatural means.

The people of Philippi were drawn to fortune-tellers, and God sent Paul and Silas to reveal His truth and salvation.  

​But the possessed young girl became a distraction and for many days, she followed Paul and Silas crying out, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.”

The “spirit of divination” (Greek: pneuma pythona) is where the term python originates. 

The python spirit is not just a random demonic presence, This spirit seeks to constrict, suffocate, and drain the life of a believer’s spiritual walk. 

And just as a python snake wraps itself around its prey to cut off breath and movement, the python spirit works to cut off our spiritual vitality, prayer life, and connection to God’s voice. 

Without the ability to hear God’s voice; His instructions; His direction salvation and deliverance is limited and many will turn to psychics and fortune-tellers for answers.  This is why we must understand the operations of the python spirit so that we can dismantle its stronghold over our lives.

Understanding the Python Spirit
The Greek word pneuma pythona refers to the ancient Oracle of Delphi in Greek mythology. The Oracle of Delphi is, where a spirit supposedly gave “prophetic” utterances. 

In biblical terms, it represents a counterfeit prophetic influence, one that mimics the voice of God to deceive, manipulate, or control. 

Even today every year hundreds of thousands of people visit the ancient Oracle in Delphi seeking demonic utterances from a rock without realizing the spiritual implication and assignment of a python spirit. 

They seek out psychics and fortune-tellers, delve into tarot card reading, mediums, and crystals not realizing how the python spirit is slowly draining their spiritual lives and finances. 

Python spirits will:

● Choke one’s prayer (make you feel prayerless, tired, or distracted).
● Disrupt your discernment (bring confusion about what God is saying).
● Drain spiritual strength (cause weariness in worship and intercession).
● Devour your finances (cause loss of money).

Jesus warned in John 10:10 that the thief comes only to “steal, kill, and destroy,” but He came so we may have life abundantly. 

The python spirit is a thief.

It comes to steal your breath (symbolic of the Holy Spirit) and suffocate your spiritual flow. 

How do you know if a python spirit is in your life?

Signs You May Be Under Python Attack
While every believer faces trials, there are certain patterns and signs that may point to the python spirit at work:

1. Sudden heaviness during prayer or worship. You feel like you “can’t break through.” Or your consistent prayer life has dwindled significantly due to distractions, obstacles, and/or sudden, unexpected interruptions.

2. Loss of prophetic clarity. You struggle to hear God’s voice. Or you become uncertain whether you hear God when you once had greater clarity. You experience distorted dreams.

3. Unusual fatigue in spiritual matters. You have energy for everything but spending time with God in prayer.  Your prayer life dwindles. Or you find that you become tired or exhausted when it’s time to pray or study the Word.

4. Confusion and distraction. You experience sudden mental battles during spiritual assignments. Your ability to pray or minister to others becomes challenging. Scripture is easily misquoted or forgotten totally.

5. Financial loss.  Money is attached to the python spirit just as it was in Acts 16:16. You will experience financial problems, or they may dry up or constrict as they try to choke your ministry or life. 

After days of harassment, Paul discerned the spirit and confronted it directly saying, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!” 
The python spirit must be discerned, confronted, and dismantled. It should never be ignored or left to its own devices.  Doing so is dangerous and can even be deadly.

Overcoming the Python Spirit
The steps to defeating this spirit requires spiritual alertness, authority in Christ, and persistence in prayer. 

The python spirit will squeeze the life out of your prayer life and authority in Christ when left unattended. 

Here are some steps to overcoming the python spirit.

Confront with the Word of God
Just as Jesus confronted Satan with scripture in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11), we must speak God’s Word out loud. Ephesians 6:17 calls the Word of God “the sword of the Spirit.”

Example declarations:
● “No weapon formed against me shall prosper.” (Isaiah 54:17)
● “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” (Psalm 27:1)

Strengthen Your Prayer Life
Luke 18:1 reminds us that we “should always pray and not give up.” The python spirit thrives in spiritual passivity—don’t give it room to squeeze the breath out of your prayer life. Establish a daily discipline of prayer, worship, and scripture reading, even if you feel resistance.

Tip: Pray in tongues (1 Corinthians 14:4) to edify yourself and keep your spiritual breath flowing.

Break Agreement with Counterfeit Prophecy
The python spirit often operates through false prophetic voices or manipulative words. Test every prophecy and spirit with scripture (1 John 4:1).

If you received a word that brought fear, bondage, or confusion, renounce it in prayer and align yourself with God’s truth. Ask God to order your steps and align with believers who are strong in the word.

Declare Your Freedom in Christ
2 Corinthians 3:17 says, “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” Remember, you are seated with Christ in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6). You have authority over the enemy (Luke 10:19). Declare aloud that you are free from every constricting spirit in the name of Jesus.

Prayer to Overcome the Python Spirit
Heavenly Father,

In the name of Jesus, I take authority over every python spirit assigned against my life, my ministry, my career, my finances, and my household. Send a fresh wind of the Holy Spirit to fill me afresh. I decree and declare that every constriction, every attack against my prayer life, and every counterfeit voice is silenced now in Jesus’ name. I decree that I walk in clarity, freedom, and the fullness of Your power. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

The python spirit is a real spiritual force, but it is powerless against the authority of Christ in you. Increase your discernment. Paul’s example in Acts 16 teaches us that discernment plus decisive action will break its grip. Keep your spiritual life strong through prayer, worship, and the Word. Victory belongs to you through Christ.

Isaiah 59:19 says,
So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and His glory from the rising of the sun; when the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD will lift up a standard against him.

Let God’s that standard be lifted against the enemy in your life today and refuse to let the spirit of python rob you of your God-given destiny, finances, or spiritual walk with Him.
