I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied. 1 Corinthians 14:5 The prophetic is a profound and multifaceted concept deeply rooted in spiritual and biblical traditions. At its core, the prophetic involves receiving and communicating divine messages, insights, or revelations from God. The prophetic is not merely about predicting future events but encompasses a broader scope of discerning God’s heart, intentions, and direction for individuals, communities, and even nations. The prophetic operates through the gift of prophecy (1 Corinthians 12:10). There are three levels to the prophetic: 1) the gift of prophecy, 2) the spirit of prophecy, and 3) the office of the prophet.
The gift of prophecy enables believers to speak forth messages inspired by the Holy Spirit. These messages often bring edification, exhortation, and comfort (1 Corinthians 14:3). The prophetic can manifest through spoken words, visions, dreams, impressions, or even symbolic actions, all serving as methods through which God communicates His will. One of the primary purposes of the prophetic is to draw people closer to God. When a prophetic word is released, it carries the potential to ignite faith, bring clarity, and align hearts with God's purposes. The prophetic reveals God’s perspective, often providing insight into circumstances that might not be visible through natural means. This is why the prophetic is often associated with spiritual discernment and the unveiling of hidden truths. The Bible is filled with examples of prophetic ministry. Old Testament prophets, such as Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel, not only foretold future events but also called God’s people to repentance and obedience. Unlike the spirit or gift of prophecy prophets are chosen by God and born into their call. Prophets are messengers of God. They are God’s spokespersons, delivering messages that are relevant both for their present context and for future generations. In the New Testament, prophecy continued to play a vital role through figures like Agabus (Acts 11:27-28) and through the encouragement of prophetic gifts within the early church (1 Thessalonians 5:20-21). The prophetic is still active today. Many believers experience prophetic encounters through prayer, worship, and prophetic journaling—capturing God’s voice through written reflections. The prophetic continues is a powerful tool for guidance, spiritual warfare, warning of things to come, calling forth repentance and building up the body of Christ. The prophetic should be approached with wisdom and discernment. The enemy works through false prophets. Believers are encouraged to "test all things" and "hold fast to what is good" (1 Thessalonians 5:21). This testing involves measuring prophetic words against the truth of Scripture, seeking confirmation through prayer, and maintaining a humble and teachable spirit. The prophetic is a dynamic and sacred expression of God’s voice on the earth. It is a bridge between heaven and earth, providing insight, encouragement, and direction. Whether through a gentle whisper in prayer or a bold declaration from a prophetic voice, God’s desire is to communicate with His people. He desires to reveal what is on His heart. Embracing the prophetic requires openness, sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, and a commitment to stewarding God’s word with integrity and love. For those who feel a pull towards the prophetic, it is a call to deeper intimacy with God and a readiness to be a vessel through which His voice can be heard.
